PanicHold

PanicHold

PanicHold is an emergency safety feature designed for situations where the user needs to immediately prevent exposure of sensitive information.

VeilVault is a security-first, offline-only password vault developed by CodeVeil.

PanicHold prioritizes speed and certainty over reversibility.

Purpose

PanicHold exists to address real-world scenarios such as:

  • Sudden interruption while the vault is open
  • Coercive or high-pressure situations
  • Accidental exposure of sensitive data in public

The goal is to immediately deny visibility of vault contents.

What PanicHold Does

When PanicHold is triggered:

  • Visible vault content is immediately obscured
  • User interaction with vault data is blocked
  • The vault transitions to a locked state

No confirmation dialogs are shown.
No additional input is required.

Speed is intentional.

What PanicHold Does Not Do

PanicHold does not:

  • Hide the existence of VeilVault
  • Encrypt data beyond the existing vault encryption
  • Protect against attacks while the vault remains unlocked elsewhere
  • Replace proper device-level security

It is a situational defense, not a comprehensive protection mechanism.

Relationship to Emergency Wipe

PanicHold is distinct from emergency wipe actions.

  • PanicHold focuses on immediate concealment
  • Emergency wipe focuses on permanent data destruction

Users should understand the difference before relying on either feature.

Limitations

PanicHold cannot protect against:

  • Exposure that occurs before activation
  • Malware with system-level or elevated privileges
  • Attacks performed after the vault is already unlocked elsewhere

PanicHold is designed to reduce immediate exposure through rapid concealment and lockout, not to provide ongoing screen capture protection.

User Responsibility

PanicHold is most effective when:

  • The user understands how it is triggered
  • The feature is tested in advance
  • It is combined with automatic locking and strong device security

Emergency features require familiarity before emergencies occur.

Summary

PanicHold provides a fast, deliberate way to shut down vault visibility in unexpected or high-risk situations.

It is intentionally simple, immediate, and destructive to ongoing access — by design.
