Export & Backups

This document explains how data export and backups work in VeilVault.

VeilVault is a security-first, offline-only password vault developed by CodeVeil.

VeilVault does not perform automatic backups.
Backup responsibility belongs to the user.

Why Exports Matter

Because VeilVault operates without cloud sync or remote storage:

  • There is no automatic backup
  • There is no server-side copy
  • There is no recovery mechanism

Exports are the only way to create a backup of your data.

Export Availability

Export functionality is always available:

  • During the trial period
  • After trial expiration
  • After purchase

VeilVault never locks users out of their data without an export path.

Export Format

VeilVault supports exporting vault data in a standard, portable format.

  • Exports are user-initiated
  • The destination is chosen by the user
  • Exported files are written using Android’s Storage Access Framework

VeilVault does not automatically upload, encrypt, or sync exported data.

Security Considerations

Exported data leaves the protection of the encrypted vault.

Users should understand that:

  • Exported files may be readable outside VeilVault
  • Exported files are not automatically encrypted by the app
  • Anyone with access to the export file may be able to read its contents

VeilVault cannot protect exported data once it leaves the app.

Backup Responsibility

Users who rely on VeilVault should consider:

  • Exporting regularly
  • Storing backups in a secure location
  • Encrypting backups using external tools if needed
  • Keeping backups offline or in a trusted environment

Backup strategy is a user decision.

Handling Exported Files

After a successful import or transfer, users may want to review where the exported file is stored.

Exported files can remain in locations such as temporary folders or download directories, which may not be intended for long-term storage.

Users are responsible for deciding whether to retain, move, secure, or delete exported data after use.

Device Migration

When moving to a new device:

  1. Export the vault on the old device
  2. Transfer the export file securely
  3. Import it on the new device

VeilVault does not automatically migrate data between devices.

What VeilVault Does Not Do

VeilVault does not:

  • Perform automatic backups
  • Sync data between devices
  • Upload vault data to the cloud
  • Manage or monitor backup files

These behaviors are intentionally excluded.

Summary

  • Exports are manual and user-controlled
  • Backup responsibility lies with the user
  • Export is always available
  • Data outside the vault is no longer protected

VeilVault prioritizes user control over automated convenience.
